For most people the idea of “sales” comes with images of snake oil salesmen, used car dealers pounding on a car hood during Saturday morning television, and even “getting robbed” and “taken to the cleaners.” Certainly not a pretty picture of one of life’s basic activities – selling.
And unfortunately, there’s a lot of that on the Internet.
We’ve talked with our colleagues and our Internet marketing students about the typical tone online sales copy and they routinely say they feel put off, offended — one woman even used the term ‘violated.’
They hate the ‘hype’ and exaggerated claims, the sense of false urgency, and the in-your-face style. Some of them even feel they can’t really get out there and market their products and services without feeling like they’ve sold themselves to the devil.
But . . .
Recently Judith was interviewed by Janet Beckers, the founder of Wonderful Web Women, an Australian site. The women (and men) who were on the call kept saying “how refreshing” it was to hear about soft sell, heart-based marketing — a marketing style that was inviting, personal, intimate and that works!
That’s why we’re so pleased with the buzz that’s growing about our conference Bridging Heart and Marketing. It’s as if, by offering this conference and the soft sell approach, we’ve given permission for soft sell marketers to publicly express their need for a supportive new marketing voice.
So what is a soft sell marketer?
It’s anyone who cares about the integrity of the sales relationship equally with making the sale. It’s not “make the sale at any cost.”
Soft sell is focused more on the depth of the connection. So rather than thinking of “closing the sale,” soft sell marketers see it more as “opening the relationship.” That way the sale can be respected and enjoyed by both sides and create the basis for continued sales.
The true sale is in the connection, not in the price, the discount, or the guarantee. Those can be important elements, but they take a back seat to trust at the heart of the exchange.
And as any successful sales person knows, it’s the trust that creates the feeling and it’s the feeling that seals the deal.
So, if you’re a soft sell marketer who prefers a more inclusive, emotionally connected business relationship with your prospects and customers — you’re invited to register for a free series of 10 tele-calls previewing our Bridging Heart and Marketing Internet conference that takes place February 22, 23, 24 at the Westin Los Angeles Airport. We’ll be sharing the soft sell wisdom of world-class Internet marketers. Just click on Bridging Heart and Marketing — and join us.
