 Joe Sugarman, one of the nation’s leading advertising and marketing experts, spoke of integrity in his book Triggers. He said:

 I like to call integrity very simply “walking your talk.” Anybody can have integrity as long as they walk their talk. A criminal can have integrity. You don’t have to be honest or sincere.

Although I think the idea of  “walking your talk,” when you use it as a rule of thumb, can put you on a fast track to some conclusion or action — in the end it’s not sufficient as a definition of true integrity.

Why?

Because, even though it sounds good, it really deflects from the heart of the matter.

“Transparency” is another term that’s become vogue in Internet marketing circles. A while back we attended an Internet event at which a speaker repeatedly use the word transparent: “Am I being transparent?” “This is what being transparent is all about.” “I want you to see how transparent I am.”

Shakespeare, whose insight into human motives is legendary, said it simply: “The lady doth protest too much.”

When someone is real and sincere, being so doesn’t take a lot of reiteration. Genuine transparency takes care of itself.

When someone is opaque, purposefully or unconsciously hidden, but it’s to their advantage to appear open and visible, they have a need to claim transparency in the “protest too much” sense.

So here are two questions. What is transparency? And what is its purpose?

Value is prominent in any sales transaction. In the traditional and typical transaction, value refers to the expected result obtained from the product or service purchased balanced against the dollar cost.

From the buyer’s side — “Is what you promise worth what you’re asking?”

From the seller’s side — “What you’re going to get from what I offer will be worth every penny and then some.”

This product-for-price value measure is totally appropriate. However it’s limited. Why? Because it’s entirely external. It’s only about the numbers.

There’s another measure of value that is equal to if not more important than even the price, a value that is central to the soft sell point of view. It’s about the relationship developed between the buyer and seller — the partnership.
